words i am pondering today

Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.--Desmond Tutu

Family Fest Day 3: fairies in the forest

Now I'm up to Day 3 of the Family Fest Wrap-up, and the day of the Fairies in the Forest Teaparty we held to celebrate Happy's 6th birthday.

Problem is, while I do have some good photos to share, I have far fewer than I would like.

The thing is, fairies are, as you may have heard in stories from your childhood, rather elusive creatures.

Especially when in their native habitat, they can be quite difficult to capture with a camera.

Even with our experience with fairy photography in the past, neither DH nor I could easily capture them this time around.  (Thank you, Emily, for your charming efforts!)

They flit, they float, they fleetly flee and fly. . .

Goodbye. . .

Luckily, while you will occassionally catch one on its own. . .

. . . fairies are usually found in flocks.

We were fortunate enough to come upon a flock roosting, but still the camera could not capture them well in the dim light of the deep redwood forest.

But of course, like all of God's wild and winged creations, they were quick to flee from the intrusion of much larger creatures bearing cameras.

But if you know some of the natural habits of wild creatures, you can often follow.  In this case, we have enough experience with fairies to know they are drawn to water.

And to know that the glimpses we get of fairies in the wild--frustratingly hard as they are to effectively capture--are so much closer to the truth of these amazing creature's existence than any image we could capture of them in captivity.  It is through their uninhibited flittering and frolicking in their natural environment that we can see them as God intended them to be.

  2. That is so sweet! The size of the trees gives a completely fairy feel to the entire day and those fairies look positively magical as they flit about. Love, love, love the idea and pics!

  3. Your story fits the pictures so well! Love it! As to pics of me -- vanity, vanity, thy name is woman. It is hard to face that I really am almost 69 and the pics show me as I really look. Actually, I don't mind being almost 69 -- just looking I am:) Use whatever pics you want. I trust you completely.

  4. Thought you all would like these, blurry as they are. : )

Dawn, so nice to hear from you! No, this is not at our house, but behind and below the elementary school just down the road. It is the same creek that runs behind our house, though, and we have the same kinds of trees, and even some lovely big stumps, but none quite that majestic! I discovered that area quite by accident years ago, while walking the dog, and it has been the site of our Fairies in the Forest Teaparties ever since.

Mom, actually you look younger than almost 69, as the pics I post next from the party itself will show. : )
